Mercer Street

This multi-family Jersey City brownstone was a treasure trove of intricate crown molding, elaborate plaster ceiling medallions, marble fireplaces and antique fixtures—all in questionable condition and many painted in garish gold hues. These neglected grand features would provide another grand challenge for the Projects team: How do we complete a full layout redesign in the midst of so many fragile original details?

The parlor level of Mercer Street was one of many areas bursting with character and distinct decorations that threatened to dislodge and shatter on the floor at a moment’s notice. Great care and diligent planning would ensure banging from hammers and vibrations from heavy construction was reduced, while making certain all molding and ceiling details were properly secured.

An ornate floor—muted by years of use and layers of dirt—was perfectly recreated to honor the original slanted field and artistic border woven into the perimeter.

In order to achieve single-family functionality from a multi-family floorplan, a massive open space fit for a top-of-the-line, gourmet kitchen was created at the rear of the parlor level. The expanded kitchen footprint incorporates a large central island for both seating and storage while a

floor-to-ceiling folding glass door NanaWall lends copious light along with amazing indoor/outdoor entertaining and dining. High-quality Carrara marble and penny tiles in neutral colors, along with glass accents in the kitchen, define this modern space with classic aesthetic.

Refurbishing a Historic Brownstone 

The thoughtful layout redesign also created an opportunity to up the bedroom count by one, bringing the total to five airy bedrooms, all with ample closet space and private bathrooms. On the garden level, the team focused on ultra-luxe amenities through the addition of a private gym and lounge, complete with a wet-bar and a second fully opening glass door NanaWall to the landscaped backyard and garden.
